ACL 101:

The Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) is a ligament inside the knee that connects the femur (thigh bone) to the tibia (shin bone).

  • This ligament helps to prevent extra rotation in the knee and prevents the tibia from sliding forward further than it should. The ACL can often be injured when landing from a jump, planting and twisting, or if someone contacts the knee (such as a tackle during sports). Often this type of injury will present with swelling of the knee, pain and an unstable feeling with weight bearing on the knee.
